2017 TN Tri Buzz Champ - Interview with Jack McAfee

Image
This week we talk to top Tennessee age grouper Jack McAfee and hear about how he started in triathlon, his recent Kona experience, the Bridges to Buffs swim race, and much more. Thanks for taking the time Jack! Photo Credits to Talbot Cox and Nick Morales In doing our research for Tennessee Tri Buzz it was hard to get through race results in Tennessee the last few years without your name at the top. What is your athletic background and how did you get into triathlon? I’ve been “swimming” since about the time I learned to walk, and naturally this led me to compete in the sport from a very early age. But by the time I reached high school, I was experiencing a severe burn-out of swimming which led me to give running a try. Since this was such a contrast to my swimming experience, I flourished, and was able to receive a running scholarship in college. Somewhere along the way I was encouraged to pick up a bike and give a triathlon a try. You ran a smokin’ fast 2...

Tri Like an Angel - Interview with Chris Ray

Image
Chris and Addie Ray are the father-daughter duo in Tennessee bringing awareness to Angelman Syndrome through triathlon. Among other things, here Chris discusses how they got started in tri, their 2017 season, and what's next. Thanks for the time, Chris! Anyone that raced on the Endurance Sports Management circuit this year knows the name Addie Ray. You two are an inspiration to many people in the community. How did you and Addie get involved in triathlon? My wife, Michelle, actually got it all started.  She became interested in endurance running in 2014 and ran several half marathons.  She wanted to share her experience with Addie, so she found a group that races with disabled individuals based in Atlanta.  They were doing Peter's Free Wheelin 5k in Dalton in the Spring of 2015 so Michelle pushed Addie through her first race.  Addie loved it! She laughed and giggled and cheered the whole race.  I wasn't even interested in racing at that time.  It...

Tennessee Age Group Rankings

Image
After months and months of analyzing the results from the past year of triathlon in Tennessee, we are happy to publish the first ever Tennessee Age Group Rankings. We have used Utah Tri Buzz's methodology ( here ) for the rankings and we feel that it pretty accurately reflects your position among your age group. If you are friends with or teammates with someone on the list, please spread the word so they can bask in their much-deserved glory. If you think you should be on the list and you're not, please email us. You wouldn't believe how many John, Jon, Johnathan, and Jonathan Smiths there are out there and how hard it is to tell them apart. The goal is to get more people out to local races. We have a great list of races all over the state and we need YOU out there! Hopefully this will provide you with a little extra motivation for your off-season training and those early mornings on the trainer and those cold mornings in the pool. The methodology is very sim...

Results: Ironman World Championship 2017

Image
Our athletes did an amazing job this weekend at the Ironman World Championship. If you see them make sure to congratulate them on a world class effort. Stay tuned for interviews with a few of these athletes on their experiences on the big island.

Locals at the Ironman World Championship

Image
It's that time of year when the world's best head down to the Big Island, eat as much poke as they possibly can, and then swim/bike/run their little hearts out for eternal glory and a little wooden bowl. Big shout to our local athletes that will be there representing the volunteer state. It is incredibly difficult to qualify for this race and very few of us will get the opportunity to do so. You guys inspire and motivate all of us. You can follow these athletes during their race using either the Ironman website ( here ) or downloading the app IronMobile. The television coverage this year is listed below: Live race start coverage on NBCSN from 12:30 - 2:00 EST Live reports on NBC and NBCSN from 2:00 - 8:30 EST Live race finish on NBCSN from 8:30 - 10:00 PM EST Here is the current list of local athletes that we know will be racing. Please let us know if we're missing any and we will update. Email us at TennTriBuzz@gmail.com. Good Luck!! Robyn Wilh...

Tennessee Tri Buzz is Live!

Image
We wanted to start a page where people could go to find out the latest information on all things triathlon and endurance sport in this great state of Tennessee. We teamed up with the gang from Utah Tri Buzz  to help us on this journey and create a blog that will help promote the sport, it's athletes, and the community that supports it. This is not Slowtwitch. There will be no comparing watts here or critiques of your aero position. The plan is to post a few times a week on all things related to the local tri scene. Are you trying to figure out what races you want to do next year? Click here . Do you want to know if Michael Mendoza held off Ashley Powell to win Toughman Tennessee last weekend? Click here . Want to know where you rank amongst all of the 45-49 year old men experiencing the same mid-life crisis? We're here for you! A few other ideas we have for the season: Interviews with local athletes, race directors, triathlon clubs, and many others A Race Preview and...
